Man charged with sending 1 meeeellion spam emails in 4 years
8 February 2017
Michael Persaud of Scottsdale, Arizona, a longtime ROKSO spammer, has been arraigned on charges of 10 counts of wire fraud. Luke Wilusz, Man charged with sending more than 1M spam emails, Chicago Sun-Times (2017). It is alleged that, between 2012 and 2015, Mr. Persaud sent more than a million spam emails.
I haven’t seen the charging document, but it looks like the case is coming from a couple of different directions:
- CAN-SPAM Act non-compliance. The news article says: “He sent more than a million spam emails to people in the U.S. and abroad, using false names to register domains and creating fraudulent ‘from address’ fields to conceal the fact that he was the one sending the emails.”
- Wire fraud. It is also alleged that when his accounts were shut down that Mr. Persaud used fake drivers licenses and debit cards to open new accounts.
It appears that he is facing up to 20 years in prison.
